MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team fell to the NPF All-Stars, 5-1, on Saturday night at Gameday’s First Tennessee Fields in Cordova.
In the first inning, NPF attacked early as Ashley Charters got the first hit of the game with an infield single to third base. After a Charters steal, Charlotte Morgan would send her home with a single to left center field for 1-0 NPF lead.
The All-Stars added another run in the third inning as Jamee Juarez led off the inning with a double to left center before Caitlin Lowe brought her in with a liner down the right field for a triple to give NPF a 2-0 through three innings.
In the sixth inning, two Tiger errors allowed NPF to bring across three runs. A double down the right field line by Andrea Duran would score two of the three runs. However, the Tigers would tag her out as Duran attempted a triple off the play. Through six innings, NPF held a 5-0 advantage.
The Tigers struck in the seventh as freshman Cierra Mangum reached first off a NPF throwing error to start Memphis off in the inning. With a two-out 0-2 count, junior Ashleigh King kept the Tigers alive as she sent a pitch to the left field wall, scoring freshman Wheeler Hill for the Tigers’ lone run of the game.
On the night, sophomore Jordan Richwood threw four innings for the Tigers, giving up four hits and two runs. In the final three innings, sophomore Sara Pearson fanned two batters for the Tigers, and gave up three hits and no earned runs.
Sophomore Breslin Perry, junior Ijiah Hargrove, Mangum and King provided the Tigers’ offense for the game, all with one hit. For NPF, Morgan and Juarez led the team with two hits, while Duran, Charters and Lowe each added one apiece.
In the circle, Andrea Bunner threw four innings before Brittany Mack came in to strike out eight in three innings of work.
The Tigers will play a doubleheader Sunday, Oct. 7 against Austin Peay in Clarksville at 2 and 4 p.m. before playing at Christian Brothers that following Tuesday.
