Brittany Mack
The Lady Tigers (40-25), one of two unranked teams to advance to the final eight in the WCWS needed to win two elimination games on Saturday to stay alive. They won the first, but couldn’t pull off the second victory, falling 6-0 to defending champion Arizona State.
The Lady Tigers survived their first elimination game of the day with a 1-0 victory over South Florida (50-14). Brittany Mack’s two-hitter helped lead LSU past South Florida. Mack struck out eight batters and gave up just two hits in tossing her 15th career shutout.
“They definitely gave us a tough game today,” Torina said. “Any one thing for either team was going to be the deal breaker in it. So luckily, we got the break and it fell our way. Our kids battled. I thought Brittany Mack pitched a great game and kept us in it.”
Mack, who signed her pro contract on Wednesday, was the USSSA Pride’s No. 1 overall draft pick in March for the NPF Pro Fastpitch League. The 2011 NFCA Third-Team All-American amassed a 56-26 record, a 1.90 ERA and 602 strikeouts over her four-year career at LSU. The 602 Ks and 56 victories rank fifth and sixth in program history.
